A little background information

My new venture

In the fall of 2024, my wife and I finally decided that we were going to relocate from New England to the Carolina’s to be closer to family. The tradeoff was, we would both be ending our current employment and I would be leaving behind my collision operations position with a dealer group. A few months leading up to our move and still passionate about this industry, I decided that I would change course and brand myself as an independent so I could network and assist collision centers in areas needing support. It then came to light, after hearing the same theme from various collision boards across the country, that many shops are challenged with the problem in not finding qualified estimators to fill the seat.

A Little bit about the "Why". . .

With today’s technology allowing connection from afar, combined with my I-CAR Platinum Estimator Certification, I decided to embark on supporting shops and their staff with virtual estimates. The unique “pay as you go” format gives the shop a sliding scale to meet the demand of turning timely estimates for their customer. The advantage to this arrangement is that each shop utilizes the program in a way that works best for them; with either long term, short term, or ‘as needed’ for a day or two when someone is on vacation, similar to a substitute teacher.  For some shops, this may mean that Collision Auditors will simply take over all the front drive estimates, while for others it is only a few a week that the need.  Not every shop is the same but each are looking for a reliable and qualified backup to help in times needed.

Nationwide Staffing Difficulties

Early in my collision operations days I typically found it to be challenging finding technicians to meet full production capacity. On the flip side,  recruiting estimators or CSR personnel was not as difficult.

As early as ten years ago, this all changed, the front office support ratio at that time was one admin to every four technicians. Today, the stats are one admin to one technician resulting in overload for the front office staff.

The landscape continued to change with Covid as insurance companies realized they could put more and more on the shop and began downsizing their own staffing in an attempt to reduce overhead.  As we saw, this led to record breaking profits for them.  Open shop assignments, which once were rare, now are commonplace.   The demand on your front office has never been greater.

It is time to take a page from their book and look at how shops can creatively staff remotely as well.  It is a balancing act as personalized customer service is paramount for customer retention.

Experience is Important

Experience is Important

Our industry is not recruiting a lot of new talent.  Many estimators out there in the insurance world are very inexperienced and lack the skills to write a thorough and complete estimate.  While virtual estimate writing is my primary focus, I also excel at estimate auditing.  This is to review estimates written by your team (or to review supplements prior to submission) to see where opportunities are being missed.  Imagine the bottom line impact if you could capture a mere $200 extra on every job that came through your shop?  It may not sound significant but take a moment to multiply that out over a month, and then over a year - often times the number can be equivalent (or double) to an estimators salary!
